The Game

Under Angmar's Shadow is set in Tolkien's Middle-earth, approximately 1,400 years before the events depicted in "The Lord of The Rings". The game takes place in the city of Tharbad, capital of the ruined Kingdom of Cardolan, and spans a period of four months leading up to the coming of age of the Princess Nirnadel, sole heir to the Cardolani Crown.

The players will take the role of various important figures in Cardolan. Typically, these are the Lords of Cardolan (the Hiri), representatives of her neighbours or other influential people such as leading merchants or mercenaries.

Each Character has his or her own goals, all of which are linked to the fate of Cardolan. Some desire power for their own ends; others desire power for the good of Cardolan; while there are those who are seeking personal glory. Some desire merely peace and stability so that they can get on with the important business of making money, while others simply want to survive or get paid.

However, regardless of which Character you play, you will have a hand in deciding the ultimate fate of Cardolan. Can the country end 230 years of civil war and petty squabling to emerge into a new era of peace, or will Cardolan finally collapse, finishing the job that the Witch-king started 230 years ago?

Background

Central to the plot is the Princess Nirnadel. It is widely assumed that on her 21st birthday, when she inherits the crown from her Regent, Chancellor Nimhir, she will announce her marriage. The Crown is weak and any marriage will be a political one, allying the Royal line to one of the major powers.

So the name of the Princess' intended husband is awaited with baited breath. Whoever she chooses will inevitably meet with more disapproval than approval. Will it be one of the Hiri (Lords) of Cardolan, or one of her powerful foreign allies, Arthedain and Gondor? Or perhaps she will find a compromise candidate or another way forward which will provide Cardolan with the strong leadership it needs.

There are other matters that also need resolving. Rumours of the Witch-king of Angmar's agents sowing seeds of discontent abound while there is also the thorny issue of the rebel Dunlending Kingdom of Sarilainn to the south and the threats of a trade blockade.

History

Under Angmar's Shadow had its first run at Intercon B in New England in March 2002 (when it was known as "Cardolani Succession"). It made a reappearance eight years later at Brit Invasion III in Chicago in June 2010 and finally had its UK debut in October 2017.
